Why Victoria Businesses Are Trading in Secret Santa for Flying Axes This Christmas Season

Axe throwing is becoming the ultimate icebreaker for Victoria businesses.

Axe Throwing Team Challenges

When Patrick Humer at MEC, planned their annual team social last year, he faced a familiar challenge: How to create a memorable team event that wouldn’t feel like forced fun.

“We wanted to break the trend of the standard social event where everyone just talks to their closest work friends over snacks and drinks,” says Humer. “We wanted something that would get people interacting, making new connections, maybe even a little competitive.”

That’s when he discovered what dozens of Victoria businesses have been buzzing about: axe throwing parties. What started as an underground trend has become a favourite solution for companies looking to shake up their traditional holiday celebrations.

The appeal? It levels the playing field. “Our staffers were loving it,” Humer laughs. “We had a new hire compete against one of our managers and they turned out to be the best thrower. We were calling them ‘The Axe Whisperer’ for a while after the event.”

This shift away from conventional office parties reflects a broader change in workplace culture. According to a recent workplace engagement study, 76% of employees prefer activity-based team events over traditional party formats.

The reason? They create natural conversation starters and shared experiences that break down departmental barriers.

What makes axe throwing particularly effective is its ability to neutralize power dynamics. Unlike traditional corporate events where status and roles can create invisible barriers, everyone starts at the same skill level. A junior marketing associate and a senior executive become equally novice when facing a wooden target, creating a rare moment of genuine, unfiltered interaction.

The venue itself plays a crucial role in these transformative experiences. Forged Axe Throwing has deliberately designed its space to encourage interaction. With carefully curated lighting, industrial-chic decor, and strategically placed seating areas, the environment itself becomes a catalyst for conversation and connection.

“The magic happens in those moments between throws,” explains James Anderson, owner of Forged Axe Throwing. “You’ll see the CEO getting throwing tips from an intern, or sales and IT teams suddenly strategizing together for a tournament. These are connections that carry back into the workplace.”

The trend has caught on so quickly that Forged is already booking up for next year. Many companies are opting for packages that combine axe throwing with catered local food and beverage services, creating a full evening of entertainment that feels more adventure than obligation.

“What surprised me most,” Humer reflects, “was how many people still talk about it months later. The inter-department rivalries, the unexpected champions, – the pictures representing bragging rights are still up in the shop.”

For businesses looking to break away from the usual holiday party formula, book early. Many companies have a standing reservation year over year, and the most popular time slots are filling quickly.

“The best part,” Humer adds with a smile, “is that for once, we knew people would actually show up for a staff event. They’re already asking me when we’re going back. Who doesn’t love throwing axes and eating pizza!?”
