Growlies to Host Canadian Debut of Documentary "Pet Fooled"

Growlies for Pets, a Langford fresh pet food provider, is hosting the Canadian theatrical premiere of Pet Fooled, a documentary that explores the current pet food industry, as part of a series of events to celebrate St. Pet-Tricks Day in Victoria. The weekend events include a private screening with the film’s writer and director, Kohl Harrington; a Meet the Makers mingler with fresh food representatives from Canada and the United States; and fun activities at the Growlies location on Jacklin Road for all good dogs and cats.
The idea for Pet Fooled, the first commercial film made about the pet food industry, was conceived when Harrington’s research into dietary requirements for pets identified a disparity between what is being offered and what is species appropriate. “We created Pet Fooled” said Harrington, “to help consumers realize they have a right to know – and understand fully – what’s in the products they’re feeding their pets.”
In the video, Dr. Barbara Royal, DVM, CVA, explains, “The pet food industry is telling us what to feed our pets based on what is best for the industry, not what’s best for our pets.” Growlies owners Neal and Jo-Anne Cropper say, “We want to help pet-parents in Victoria understand they have choices when it comes to feeding their pets, and Pet Fooled does a phenomenal job of encouraging us to look beyond the marketing campaigns and evaluate the information critically. We want pet owners to do the research and choose for themselves, because their pets can’t do it for them.”
On Friday, March 17th, to celebrate St. Pet-Tricks day, Growlies for Pets on Jacklin Road in Langford will have a photo booth with funny hats and props for pictures, and free treats and bags of treats for all pets that visit the store and do a trick – even if it’s simply ‘Sit.’ One lucky pet-family will win a Growlies freezer containing $100 of frozen raw pet food for dogs, cats, or ferrets.
The Meet the Makers mingler is at 2% Jazz on Hillside on the evening of March 18th, featuring owners and operators from some of North America’s best raw and fresh pet food providers. The documentary will be screened at the Vic Theatre on Sunday, March 19th. Admission is by donation of cash or canned pet food, which will be delivered to a local food bank.
