Property tax exemption supports development of Matullia Lands
The City of Victoria is providing Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations with an up-to-10-year property tax exemption to help revitalize their Rock Bay site.
The Rock Bay Site Revitalization Tax Exemption Bylaw provides for interim use of the property while its owners, whose partnership is consolidated under Matullia Holdings, consider long term development strategies.
Esquimalt and Songhees Nations purchased 4.5 hectares of real estate along Government Street from BC Hydro in 2022, land that previously housed a coal plant. It is adjacent to three acres of waterfront the two Nations acquired from Transport Canada in 2016.
North Island College launches micro-credential program
People living in rural and Indigenous communities have access to a 12-week micro-credential training program through North Island College to help them build relevant skillsets to foster economic growth in their communities.
Funded by the Province, the program includes six individual stackable courses specifically geared toward building economic development capacity for rural and remote municipalities, local government and Indigenous communities.
The courses will help train people in such things as rural community development, entrepreneurship, market research and analysis, infrastructure and resource development. The curriculum also includes a final project where students will apply their knowledge beyond the classroom and help design an economic development plan for a municipality or a First Nations community.
The program is an NIC-led joint venture with six other participating public rural colleges. NIC will be engaging with local communities, industry experts and First Nations to build a program and curriculum plan that best aligns with the visions and needs of the people in those communities.
