Noms Sought for Tourism VI Awards

(News Release) NANAIMO — Tourism Vancouver Island is seeking nominations of tourism stakeholders who have significantly influenced the industry.
The finest tourism operators on Vancouver Island will be recognized and awarded for their outstanding contributions to the tourism industry at Tourism Vancouver Island’s 49th Annual Conference to be held in the beautiful Sooke region from September 25 to 27. Tourism Vancouver Island is excited to recognize businesses and individuals for efforts and contributions in positioning the Vancouver Island region as a premier destination. These awards will be presented to the deserving recipients during the awards ceremony at the Gala Dinner on September 26.
“Each year we are tasked with the difficult decision of choosing from amongst a collection of outstanding nominations,” says Dave Petryk, president and CEO of Tourism Vancouver Island. “The depth of creativity and diversity of ideas and marketing programs continues to inspire and impress upon us.”
This event offers stakeholders within the Vancouver Island region a chance to participate in networking opportunities, educational sessions, and fun-filled activities. Stakeholders are also given a chance to give credit to those leaders who have positively impacted the tourism industry.
The Innovator of the Year Award recognizes a business, organization, or individual that has developed or renewed a tourism product, package or initiative that captures the attention of visitors and thus increases the desirability of the Vancouver Island Region as a destination. The 2011 recipient of this award was Dr. Karl Schutz and the Chemainus Dollar.
The Multi-Media Marketing Award recognizes a business or organization for its innovative use of various forms of social media and traditional marketing mediums in a specific targeted campaign that was successful in attracting visitors to their business or organization and the Vancouver Island Region. The 2011 recipient was Tourism Victoria.
The Power of Partners Award recognizes a business or organization that has demonstrated successful partnerships with other Vancouver Island region tourism businesses or organizations. These partnerships should demonstrate increased visitation to the Vancouver Island region. The 2011 recipient of this award was Tourism Victoria.
The Tourism Employee of the Year Award offers stakeholders an opportunity to nominate and recognize a person who they feel epitomizes service excellence. Managers can nominate employees, employees can nominate each other or customers can nominate a person who they feel provided exceptional service. Stakeholders are encouraged to nominate themselves or colleagues they know who have extended themselves beyond the boundaries to assist in positioning the Vancouver Island region as a desirable destination for our visitors. The 2011 winner was Chelsea Cummings of the Beach Club Resort.
The Tourism Sustainability Award recognizes a tourism business in the Vancouver Island Region that has set out to minimize their environmental effects, conserve natural resources, respect local cultures, and benefit local communities in the past 12 months. A commitment to environmentally responsible tourism and changing the way business is conducted will serve as an example to the industry. The 2011 recipient of this award was AdrenaLINE Ziplining Adventure.
The MVP Award recognizes an individual of a tourism business that has demonstrated a commitment to the growth of tourism through outstanding contributions to Tourism Vancouver Island. The recipient of this award is selected by the staff of Tourism Vancouver Island. In 2011, this award was shared by Jennifer Ford and Chelsea Barr of Destination Nanaimo.

The nomination deadline is August 6 at 4:30 p.m. All submissions will be reviewed by the awards committee and successful recipients will be notified prior to the conference.
