(News Release) VICTORIA — Royal Roads University Foundation is a new nonprofit partner of 1% for the Planet, an alliance of over 1,380 member companies in 43 countries that give one per cent of revenues to environmental causes.
The announcement was made last week at the university’s Earth Day celebrations.
Royal Roads University Foundation is now eligible to receive donations from 1% member companies, placing it among a diverse, global network of environmental organizations. All funds received from 1% will go towards the university’s Sustainability Action for the Environment (SAFE) Fund.
“Royal Roads is thrilled to join the 1% network,” says Nancy Wilkin, director of the office of sustainability. “The SAFE Fund has contributed to creative and important projects that are bettering our planet. Access to more funds will help the university continue to work with dedicated members of our community who want to make a difference.”
The SAFE Fund supports projects led by Royal Roads students, staff and alumni aimed at reducing environmental effects. Projects have included a sea turtle activity book for elementary students in Hawaii, a worm composting system at the YMCA Academy in Toronto, and nest boxes for western screech owls in the Kootenays.
Over 2,300 nonprofits worldwide are included in the 1% network, and over $70 million has been funnelled to nonprofit partners to date.
“The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful force in solving the world’s problems,” says Yvon Chouinard, founder of 1% for the Planet.
