Urban Vancouver Island Housing Starts – June 2010

Jul 09, 2010

(News Release) VICTORIA – According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) 316 housing starts were recorded across urban Vancouver Island centres in June 2010.1 This represents an increase from the May 2010 level, but is below the five-year historical average for June. Single-detached homes accounted for nearly two-thirds of housing starts.

“Led by detached home construction, four of five urban Vancouver Island markets recorded increases in housing starts in June” said Travis Archibald, CMHC Senior Market Analyst. “In the Victoria market, a limited number of new, completed and unoccupied detached houses across the Victoria CMA will focus construction activity on the detached home sector through the second half of the year.”

Nationally, housing starts declined three per cent in June to 189,300 units, seasonally adjusted at annual rates (SAAR). In urban British Columbia, housing starts increased six per cent in June to 23,600 units SAAR.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
