(News Release) VICTORIA – Travelling public is requested to avoid the Johnson Street Bridge and use alternate routes as the bridge has lost electrical power and is stuck in the open position.
City crews are waiting for assistance from BC Hydro and are working to close the bridge manually. The cause and potential duration of delay are being confirmed.

The city of Victoria is currently missing 750 parking meters due to vandalism and theft. Most have been targeted in the downtown. It costs approximately $700 to replace each meter. Fortunately, there have been no successful attempts at vandalism or theft of the new pay stations. The city had 1,900 meters in total before introducing the new pay stations. Just over 50% of the new pay stations have been installed.
Cutting Edge At Point Hope
Heavy equipment with big shears cut up two old barges recently at Point Hope Maritime's shipyard on Victoria harbour. The machines, similar to the smaller "jaws of life" used by police and firefighters to cut victims out of car crashes, were from the Steel Pacific scrapyard across the harbour. Point Hope general manager Hank Bekkering said the barges were about 42 metres long and 14 meters wide and 40 years old and Point Hope may be getting more barges to cut up at its yard along Harbour Road.
