Management Consultants Host Brainstorm Session On B.C. Public Service

Oct 20, 2009

BerlinEaton Learning Centre, Victoria

Facing a deficit of $2.8 billion for this year and committed to keeping the big-budget services of health and education a priority, the B.C. public service is under tremendous pressure to transform its operations. Despite a moratorium on consulting services, the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of B.C. wants to help. The institute’s Vancouver Island chapter will explore how it can do so by holding a brainstorming session Oct. 20.

The session is the brainchild of chapter chair Bert Zethof, C.E.O. of The Surge Strategies Group, who will facilitate the event along with Richard Eaton, a founding partner of Berlin, Eaton & Associates. Zethof says the idea came from the chapter’s recent strategic planning sessions where members challenged each other to consider the perspective of their clients.

“The B.C. government is one of our biggest clients and its public servants are facing pressures they’ve never
encountered before,” said Zethof. “They are charged with finding new ways to deliver quality services at lower costs and at the same time they are facing a major succession planning issue, with baby boomers retiring at a time when talent and leadership are needed most.”

With its well-developed management methodologies and a membership that can offer experienced mentors to the next generation of government leaders, Zethof said the Institute of Certified Management Consultants is ideally situated to provide leadership and management support to the public service – even though there is a
moratorium on consulting services.

“I don’t know what will come out of this – I’m going into it with an open mind,” said Zethof. “But even if we simply create a dialogue during the moratorium I think that will be beneficial because both parties have a vested interest in maintaining strong relationships during these difficult times.”

Zethof said the ideas generated at the Oct. 20 brainstorming session will be further refined with a focus group of public service managers before they are brought forward to government. Some public service leaders have already committed to participate in the session and others are encouraged to participate as well.

The event is also open to non-members of the institute.
