Yoga-Inspired Apparel Store.
When Victoria entrepreneur Stephanie Hinton started taking yoga classes, it was a big stretch of the imagination to think it would lead to establishing her own clothing business. Yet 4 years later, opens a bright new store with a decidedly green attitude at 1031 Fort Street, Victoria. The grand opening is September 25 preceeded by a soft opening in late August. www.breatheathletics.com
Hinton is featuring two B.C.based fashion houses – Karma and My Tonic. (www.karmaathletics.com and www.mytonic.ca ). She laughed “I learned a lot about cloth made from crab and shrimp shells (chitosan), hemp, bamboo and terry. All those materials breathe, are anti-microbal and combined with other stretchy elements give a great look while being best for the environment”.
Hinton has even sourced hangers made from recycled material as well as stylish handbags and totes. A relaxed and charming person, Hinton is reflecting this in the atmosphere of Breathe. “I want women to feel like they can take their time selecting an outfit that is just right for them. Mix and match. There will be a reading area with Yoga and outdoor magazines, a spot for kids to amuse themselves and the kettle will always be on for a cup of tea. “For me, yoga has been therapeutic and healing and there are three wonderful studios nearby.
1000 Block Fort Street has an old-fashioned community feel. I already feel welcomed into the neighbourhood.”

A French press coffee – a flip through the latest issue of the New Yorker – and a finger wave; sounds like you’re in a hair salon in Hollywood in the 1920s, but it’s Victoria’s newest, sexiest place for a coif, Stella.
Owners Amanda Edge and Mollie Siegel spent a less than stylish month “dressed like farmers” transforming their space in Market Square into what might just be Victoria’s loveliest new salon. Amanda says she looked at several locations before she walked into their new digs and knew instantly that this was their place. The built‐in heritage feel provided the perfect bones for what has simply become “Stella”; a theme that boasts a nod to 80’s pop god Prince – who has often referred to beautiful women as ‘Stellas’. And who could forget the famous call out to “STELLAAAAA” from the 1951 classic A Streetcar Named Desire.
There’s definitely a glamorous old Hollywood feel to Stella (including the name) – purple walls with custom painted gold striped wallpaper, and a diamond tufted leather sofa Greta Garbo would have looked perfect posed on. Maybe she did? The sofa was donated by Howie Siegel, co‐owner Mollie Siegel’s father. They’ve accomplished a look and feel that’s unlike any other salon in Victoria. Both women come from very creative, entrepreneurial parents and both exude a unique style of their own. When asked, Mollie says “we’re not trying to follow a particular fashion, this is our fashion”. Safe to say – these girls follow no one!
Stella’s clientele ranges in age, sex and social demographic. Everyone who comes in shares a common desire for luxury and grace. There is a level of comfort and knowledge for the styles of popular culture throughout the last two centuries that gives them a certain upper hand. In addition, modern colors, styles and applications are continuously being studied by the staff.
Davines – an exclusive Italian product imported from Milan has rapidly become a favorite of the staff and clientele. In addition Kevin Murphy – an Australian session stylist has created a delicious line of products that could be defined as being very “green”. They have begun manufacturing products in North America to decrease excessive carbon emissions in the shipping process. Great Lengths hair extensions are one of Amanda’s specialties, with 10 years of experience in applying extensions Amanda is the “Stella” for the job.
