FROM "IN CONVERSATION" BY JODY PATERSON, DOUGLAS MAR/APR 2012
More than 200 cruise ships and almost 440,000 cruise-ship passengers visited Victoria this past year. Where are those numbers going in coming years?
We’ll see a similar level next year, probably the same number of ships but slightly larger. The widening of the Panama Canal will allow us to take bigger ships, but we’ll first need to know if the community wants that, or if we’re capable of handling it — or if the market is there.
We’ve had a harbour authority in place for nine years now. How has it made things better around the harbour?
Building a company is a lot of work. The first three or four years, that’s all you’re doing. Over the next three or four years, the harbour authority solidified the business, with double-digit growth on the cruise side of things. Now we’re dealing with property management and bringing things up to market rent — controversial, but it has to be done. I see the next five years as being about achieving a broad consensus, and management. We have one of the most beautiful harbours in the world, but if we don’t manage it well, it’s ours to lose.
